We finally have our first look at Frozen 2 (more than three years after the film was first announced in 2015), and it looks amazing! Our favorite Arendellians are back in action, and from the look of the first teaser trailer, they're in for an intense ride. We don't have much in the way of details about the movie's plot, but what we do know is that our formidable Snow Queen Elsa and her sister Princess Anna embark on an adventure far away from the kingdom of Arendelle. Of course, they're bringing Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven along with them, and it looks like they'll be needing all the help they can get!
But with the release of the trailer comes more questions than answers. Why is Elsa doing her own version of a Rocky Balboa training montage against the ocean? When did Anna brush up on her sword skills? Who are those two kids playing in leaves of the forest? And what is even going on in this forest??
While we probably won't be getting answers right away, we do have some ideas. Check out our theories on what we could be seeing when Frozen 2 hits theaters on Nov. 22.

Elsa sets off the teaser trailer by going toe-to-toe with a raging sea. There are a few ways this could been seen, with one such explanation being that this is a sort of training session. The queen could be working to see how far she can take her powers, since she's going against a literal force of nature. While Elsa gets bowled over pretty thoroughly in the clip, the scene shows a determination that alludes to preparing for a bigger battle. Sure, Elsa could just want to master her abilities, but it's more likely that something has sparked this desire to conquer another element.
Another explanation could be that Elsa is attempting to conquer the sea to get across it. She's obviously determined to get through it, so why wouldn't she be using it to get somewhere else? Maybe the water is blocking her from getting to someone who needs her help, like her sister or Olaf?
Water is naturally both an aid and a hindrance to someone with power over ice, but it looks like Elsa is trying to use her ability to best the element. Maybe she's preparing to battle someone with power over water? Or maybe this particular obstacle is more a symbol of her conquering any limitations and fully mastering her power? Or, like the chicken just trying to cross the road, she's trying to get to the other side. Whichever reason it is, it definitely looks like Elsa has her work cut out for her.
If there is anything that signals something is fishy, it's weird glowing diamonds just popping up in the air. Anna looks truly alarmed by their appearance, so these diamonds are most likely sinister in nature. It looks like the princess is still in Arendelle, so it's safe to say the diamonds are hovering outside the castle. The big questions are where do they come from and what are they the beginning of?
It's also worth noting that these diamonds appear in the teaser poster for Frozen 2 as well. The diamonds connect to make a large snowflake, and just like in the trailer, they each have different designs. Are they sentient? Did someone bring them to Arendelle and are they a warning of some sort? We have a feeling that the diamonds are one part of a much bigger problem and are a signal that something even worse is about to go down. It explains Anna's dismay and why she seems to be saying, "No!"
We love ourselves a leader! We all know that Kristoff has a way with reindeer, but it's the first time we've see him with such a large herd. He looks particularly single-minded and and purposeful here, so it begs the question of where he's charging off to. Are they charging into battle, rescue, or away from something? We'd put our money on them doing double duty and coming in for the rescue, while also doing some damage.
In one scene of the trailer, Elsa and Olaf are trapped in the middle of what looks like a heart-shaped ring of fire. The fire itself is a neon pinkish purple hue, so it's safe to say that it's probably not the regular degular kind of fire. Nonetheless, Elsa attempts to put the fire out with her ice — though it doesn't appear to do much. Though we can't see anyone else around the two, someone else most likely created the fire to trap them. They also appear to be in the forest, which is where most of the chaos seems to happen in the movie.
The biggest mystery presented in the trailer is the appearance of two new characters! Though they were only in the trailer for a few seconds, they're already 10 times more intriguing than our favorite Arendellians because we have no clue who they are!
The characters in question are a girl and boy who appear in the forest. The girl is seen standing surrounded by red leaves as she looks to her side, where a blonde-haired boy blasts out from underneath the leaves and spins in the air. There's no telling which one of the two created the gust, but it does allude to the fact that one of these characters possibly has elemental abilities like Elsa. There's also a stark difference in their appearance: the boy is dressed in clothing that's similar to Elsa's in the first movie, meaning he's probably well off. The girl is dressed in more simple clothing, similar to Kristoff's clothes.
One theory on their identities is that the two are the children of Anna and Kristoff, mostly because of the similarities between their hair colors. However, while Anna and Kristoff look different in Frozen 2, they don't look that much older. Definitely not old enough to have kids that are at least preteens.
Another theory is that the two are elementals who will show Elsa that she isn't the only one in the world with that kind of power. It would make sense if they're the ones behind all the mysterious going ons in Arendelle since they're in the forest that seems to be a huge focal point in the film. That would also be a perfect way to segue into the girl becoming the rumored girlfriend of Queen Elsa. Though — again — the two seem fairly young and neither could pass as old enough to date any of the main three.
Another theory on their identity is that the two are Disney's version of Gerda and Kai from the original The Snow Queen fairy tale that Frozen is based on. Obviously elements of the story would have to change since Elsa is the Snow Queen and we know she's not evil, but it would be awesome if Disney decided to bring these characters into the fold rather than giving bits of their story to different characters (like Kristoff is bits of Kai). The brief interaction in the trailer fits the story of how Gerda and Kai were close friends and it would be cool to see how their story changes to fit Frozen's narrative. They could also be elementals or they could just be a pair of kids who are dabbling in some dangerous magic that serves as a catalyst for all the chaos. There are so many possibilities!
As we've seen, it looks like Autumn has come and everyone looks incredibly worried about it. We're not sure what makes this Autumn so sinister, but it's obvious that Elsa and company are worried about what's going on in the forest outside of Arendelle. Is it a natural disaster or is there something magical afoot? The trees do look a tad redder than Autumn might normally look . . .
Our theory is that there's something in the forest that's threatening everything in and around it. Obviously something magical, though it could all be controlled by someone (like two kids with a mysterious agenda). Whatever it is also affects Arendelle and draws the attention of Elsa, Anna, and Kristoff. The question is whether it's purposefully sinister or if it's all a cry for help in some way.
Have we touched on how Anna has taken on a definite level in badass?? Not only is the princess sporting a new do, but she's seems to have no reservations in grabbing her beau's sword and cutting down whoever is sneaking up on them. While we have no way of knowing who exactly Anna sees as a threat, it's fair to say that there's some bad blood there. We can't help but wonder if it's Hans, the disgraced prince from the Southern Isles. Of course, it could be someone else entirely, but we're putting our money on him making a duplicitous reappearance. The question is whether it's for redemption or more scandalous betrayals.
