On Thursday, Walt Disney World announced that it will be opening up its 16th Vacation Club—a series of resorts in tropical climates where visitors can relax and recharge and save on accommodation in exchange for membership.
Opening up in 2022, this Florida resort will be “nature-themed,” though what that actually means isn’t quite clear. According to the press release, the yet unnamed resort will be “themed to complement its natural surroundings,” and will lie on the shoreline of Bay Lake, between the Wilderness Lodge and the Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground in Orlando.
“This resort experience will be a celebration of Walt Disney’s lifelong love and respect for nature, with some fun and even surprising accommodation types that families will find irresistible,” Terri Schultz, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Vacation Club, said. “It will give our members and guests yet another opportunity to stay in close proximity to all the newest attractions and experiences in our theme parks, and with the flexibility, value and world-class service families expect from Disney.”
The deluxe resort will feature over 900 hotel rooms and villas that will be “spread across a variety of unique accommodation types.” This marks the fourth expansion project of the Vacation Club, which will add more than 1,700 rooms and villas on the park’s grounds in the next four years.
“Walt Disney World is in the midst of our most significant expansion in the last two decades….[the] four different resorts will create thousands of new construction and permanent jobs and will drive economic opportunity and incremental revenue for Central Florida,” George A. Kalogridis, president of Walt Disney World Resort, said. “We continue to add new attractions, new lands — and these beautiful accommodations will be right in the heart of all that magic.”
Two of the other projects include a new 15-story tower at the Coronado Springs Resort in Buena Vista, as well as a new Riviera Resort near Epcot in 2019. But the one that has Star Wars fans the most excited about is the Star Wars-themed luxury hotel set to open on Bay Lake in 2019, where fans of the film series will be able to board a starship with views of the galaxy, meet some of the characters, and generally immerse themselves in the world of their favorite franchise.
