Legendary Marvel comic book creator Stan Lee — who co-created Black Panther, Spider-Man, X-Men, The Mighty Thor, Iron Man, The Fantastic Four, The Incredible Hulk, Daredevil, Ant-Man and many other characters — died today. He was 95.

Working in the business since 1939, Lee was known for being the first to show the “human side” of superheroes. While the machismo of DC heroes never skipped a beat, Lee wasn’t afraid to show Spider-Man having relationship problems or being insecure about his dandruff. The X-Men were freaks shunned by society rather than praised — a metaphor for the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Even the villains were emotionally complex; they weren’t pure evil, but tortured and even relatable souls. He is widely regarded as a savior of the genre as a whole.

Lee also penned a monthly comics column called “Stan’s Soapbox” where he talked directly to the readers, always signing off with his catchphrase “Excelsior!” which means “ever upward.”
