The Neighborhood | Monday, 8 p.m., CBS
When Beth Behrs wrapped up six seasons on CBS’ “2 Broke Girls,” she didn’t plan to sign for another show at the same network. Then Max Greenfield called her about playing his wife in a new sitcom, “The Neighborhood.” The show, about the Johnsons, Michigan transplants living in an edgy neighborhood, co-stars Cedric the Entertainer and received an early second-season pickup. Behrs, 33, spoke to The Post at New York’s Bowery Hotel.
You worked with Max on the movie “Hello, My Name is Doris.” Can you tell me how this encounter led to you working on “The Neighborhood”?
We loved working together and became friends afterwards. When he called me about doing [the show], it was a no-brainer. There was no shortage of where the story lines could go.
This is the first time you’ve played a mom on TV. Tell me about working with Hank Greenspan, who plays your son Grover.
I call him Daniel Day-Lewis. He is 7 going on 45. Max and I are always saying to each other, “He’s smarter than us. He knows everything about acting already.”
Besides being a sitcom wife, you also play a high-school principal. In what ways has the show explored Gemma’s career?
There was a great episode where she had to fire the gym coach. And he told her: “The only reason they hired you is because you’re a woman.” We also addressed the pay gap, and men and women in the workplace. It’s been my favorite episode that we’ve shot so far. You see Dave and Gemma’s relationship in a deeper way and he supports her.
Didn’t you want some time off before jumping into another series?
I have been doing plays since I was 4 years old. There is nothing like performing in front of a live audience. There’s truly an electricity that only exists in this medium. I grew up watching “The Carol Burnett Show” and “Friends” and I feel so grateful to have been a part of “2 Broke Girls” and “The Neighborhood,” which continue the classic multi-cam format.
I hear you’re a big fan of “Game of Thrones” and met Nikolaj Coster-Waldau on a plane. How’d that go?
I was SO star-struck. “Game of Thrones” is the only show where I have a really hard time separating the real person from the character. I wanted to call him Jaime or Mr. Lannister. And ask why he has two hands all of a sudden.

You’re married to Michael Gladis, who played Paul Kinsey, the “Mad Men” copywriter turned Hare Krishna follower. How did you two meet?
We had a mutual friend who was a costume assistant on “Mad Men.” We’ve been together nine years, married for one. We love spending time with horses, in the outdoors, hiking and traveling together. I’ve turned him into a total cowboy.
You became involved in equine therapy as a way to help survivors of sexual assault. How does equine therapy work?
Horses and humans share a similar limbic system — the emotional center of the brain and a contributor to the formation of new memories. The healing dynamic between survivors of sexual trauma and horses provides a foundation from which trust and understanding can emanate. There haven’t been a lot of scientific studies about the impact equine therapy has on PTSD in veterans or children with disabilities, survivors of sexual assault, etc. Rescuing my horse Belle was the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I always say “Who rescued who?” They are truly the most incredible animals.
