We hope you have tissues nearby, because this one is evoking lots of emotions. On Friday, Ariana Grande dropped her highly anticipated album Thank U, Next, where fans freaked out over songs like "In My Head," "NASA," and even a music video for "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored," but it's the eighth song on the album that has fans hearing what Grande went through after Mac Miller's death in September. Not only do the lyrics of "Ghostin" divulge her internal battle in mourning Miller's death while still in her then-relationship with Pete Davidson, but the song directly samples Miller's 2018 song "2009."
Before we dive into the emotional lyrics of "Ghostin," Grande herself chimed in on Twitter regarding what (and who) the song is about. "Feeling badly for the person you're with bc you love somebody else. feeling badly bc he can tell he can't compare. . . . and how I should be ghosting him," she wrote in January.
Grande sings:
"I know you hear me when I cry, I try to hold it in at night / While you're sleeping next to me, but it's your arms that I need this time (this time) / Look at the cards that we've been dealt, if you were anybody else, probably wouldn't last a day, heavy tears a rain parade from hell (from hell) / Baby, you do it so well / You been so understanding, you been so good, and I'm putting you through more than one ever should / And I'm hating myself 'cause you don't want to, admit that it hurts you / I know that it breaks your heart when I cry again, over him / I know that it breaks your heart when I cry again, 'stead of ghostin' him."
She continues, "Though I wish he were here instead, don't want that living in your head / He just comes to visit me, when I'm dreaming every now and then."
The lyrics are intimate, and fans are even saying it's "by far the most personal song" she's ever released. It's a stark contrast to the message of "Thank U, Next," and one we truthfully didn't expect to hear from the singer, but we're so glad she exposed this side to her emotions. The lyrics paired with Miller's "2009" make for a beautiful song. Ahead, see how fans are reacting to Grande's heartbreaking song, "Ghostin."
