Stuffy British actors livid after audience watches World Cup

An English cast of “Titanic The Musical” fumed when audience members divided their attention between icebergs and soccer penalty kicks.

Actors of the high-minded musical production lashed out at “stupid” and “ignorant” theatergoers who pumped their fists as England’s national team scored a dramatic World Cup victory over Colombia on Tuesday night.

“To the two women in the front row tonight who not only followed the penalty shootout on their phone, but also said ‘yesss’ on each goal scored, you are the most ignorant audience members I have ever had the misfortune to perform in front of,” tweeted angry actor Niall Sheehy, who plays Frederick Barrett in the “Titanic” at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham.

England won in penalties Tuesday night when Tottenham Hotspur standout Eric Dier connected on the winning spot kick at about 9:52 p.m. BST – so with about 13 minutes from the end of “Titanic.”

Actor Kieran Brown, who plays First Officer William McMaster Murdoch, said he was “raging” that his dramatic lifeboat scene was upstaged.

“Dumbfounded. 2 ladies, 1 older 1 middle aged, slap bang front row clearly watching football on phones during the most poignant moment of lifeboats scene, cheering & giggling like stupid schoolgirls. To say I’m raging is an understatement! They should be marched out in disgrace!” Brown tweeted – with an angry face emoji for emphasis.

With two days reflection, Sheehy admitted he might have been overly dramatic.

He backtracked via Twitter on Thursday: “My phrasing may have been too aggressive re: the audience members. For that, I happily apologise, but I stand by my opinion that they were inconsiderate to others in the audience.”

But in a BBC radio interview, Brown remained as salty as the north Atlantic.

“There’s no excuse for that – lack of respect for the actors and the people who sat around them,” he said of the soccer-loving audience members.

England advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals, playing Sweden at 3 p.m. local time on Saturday.

“Titanic” has a 2:30 p.m. matinee that day, meaning the England-Sweden soccer match should end regulation play at about the show’s conclusion. At least a possible overtime and penalties would happen after final bow.
