Stan Lee, the face of Marvel Comics who helped revitalize the genre while co-creating almost every staple character in the Marvel Universe, died on Monday, and all week we’ve been remembering the massive impact he made on the entire entertainment industry.
But Lee was unique in that a large part of his esteem didn’t come until his later years. When he was helping to build the Marvel Universe, the traditional literary types in Manhattan didn’t recognize comic books as a legitimate form of writing. The leaders of the industry, as Lee put it, “avoided him like a plague.”
Because of this, he was humbled in a way unlike many other celebrities. He developed a true appreciation for every piece of fan mail that came his way. It was a connection he talked about in his final, heartfelt message to his fans, which you can watch below:

“I love my fans. I cannot tell you how much I love my fans,” Lee says in the video. “There’s something, if you think about it, that is wonderful about somebody caring about you as I care about them, whom you’ve never met, who may live in another part of the world. But they care, and you have something in common, and occasionally you contact each other. This business of fans, I think is terrific, and I love ’em all.”
