Meet the New “Most Livable” City in the World

It’s clean and efficient, has tons of fantastic food, history, and culture, and the weather’s pitch-perfect year-round. But, if you’re considering relocating abroad, you now have another reason to put Vienna at the top of your list.

The Economist Intelligence Unit has recently released its Global Livability Index for 2018, and the Austrian capital has displaced Melbourne, Australia, as the most livable city in the world. The lessened risk of terror attacks, as well as an enviably low crime rate, helped nudge the city into the top spot.

It should also be noted that, back in March, Vienna was also crowned the best city for Americans to live abroad by a Mercer ranking of Quality of Living for expats. The ranking was based on crime levels, currency exchange regulations, personal freedoms, medical services, the number of international schools, the efficiency of public transportation, the cost of housing, the climate, and the number of fun things to do, and Vienna earned excellent marks in every category, topping the list for the ninth year in a row.

If Vienna doesn’t appeal to you, you have options. Melbourne scored second place in the Global Liveability Index, followed by Osaka, Japan; Calgary, Canada; Sydney, Australia; Vancouver, Canada; Tokyo ,Japan; Toronto, Canada; Copenhagen, Denmark; and Adelaid ,Australia.

On the other end of the spectrum, Damascus, the capital of Syria, was named the least livable place in the world, followed by Dhaka, the Bangladeshi capital, and Lagos, Nigeria.

But if what you’re looking for is a joyful existence more so than a quiet and stable one, you might consider moving to Finland, which has been named the happiest country on Earth. And if you’d like to move somewhere a little closer to home, check out the U.S. States Where People Live the Longest.
